Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust (BSUH) is an acute teaching hospital working across two sites: the Royal Sussex County Hospital (RSCH) and the Princess Royal Hospital (PRH) which is located in Haywards Heath which is approximately 12 miles north of Brighton in the heart of West Sussex.

The Matron will be an integral member of the directorate/divisional management team supporting the division in the delivery of key performance targets. S/he will be accountable for the provision of effective professional nursing leadership and proactive resource management for the clinical area. As an experienced practitioner the post holder will be expected to focus on providing a clean environment for care, ensuring best practice in infection control, improving clinical care standards and treating patients with dignity and respect.


The post holder will:

  1. Act as a positive role model through the provision of effective professional leadership and demonstration of competent, accountable clinical practice.
  2. Provide day-to-day visible (in uniform), accessible and authoritative leadership in clinical areas.
  3. Ensure the delivery of patient care is of the highest standard.
  4. Actively support the division in the provision of high quality, modern, dynamic and patient centred services.
  5. Provide support to patients and their relatives/carers.
  6. Be responsible for optimising access to main Out-patient services through their areas of responsibility and for facilitating access to Out-patient areas within other Divisions.
  7. Will be responsible for the performance management of departmental Sisters and if applicable clinical nurse specialists to ensure delivery of healthcare standards and Trust objectives.

• Posts in the Trust are subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Criminal Records Bureau to check for any previous criminal spent and unspent convictions, reprimands, and cautions.

• Appointment to this role will commence at the lowest salary point unless confirmed otherwise by HR Employment Services (Recruitment, Administration & Terms and Conditions)
