We are wishing to appoint a fixed term ST3 for a period of 6 months (possible extention pending service provision) at the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton.

The Vascular Department provides a regional service with 24/7 Vascular cover for Sussex. The entire range of vascular and endovascular procedures including complex thoracic and abdominal aortic procedures and renal access surgery are undertaken by the unit. There are 4 Consultants based in Brighton and 2 shared with Worthing Hospital, 1 based at the St Richard’s hospital Chichester, 1 based at the East Surrey Hospital and soon to be 2 between the hospitals in Hastings and Eastbourne, these consultants deal with all vascular emergencies and elective arterial work for Sussex on the Brighton site on a 1:8 (10) rota. There are 8 Registrars with a 1:8 on call rota. Major Vascular Surgery is done on the Brighton site but there are day surgery sessions in Lewes Hospital and endovenous sessions in Brighton. In-patient care is provided by a specialized team of vascular nurses. There are Vascular Nurse Specialists working on the wards and in outpatients who also run claudication supervised exercise clinics. There is a busy Vascular Assessment Centre in Brighton staffed by 5 vascular technologists using state-of–the-art equipment, who also provide duplex services for the vascular clinics in Brighton, Worthing and Haywards Heath. Endovenous treatment is also offered through the vascular lab. There are weekly MDM meetings with interventional radiology and monthly audit meetings. There is close collaboration with cardiac surgery, cardiology and renal medicine. With regard to In-patient care, the emphasis is on team working (rather than firm – based) with daily vascular ward rounds, and efficient use of theatre time so urgent cases are dealt with on the next available list regardless of consultant ownership. There is a dedicated Vascular theatre team and vascular theatres including a hybrid endovascular theatre. There is a close working relationship between the vascular surgeons and interventional radiologists with excellent training opportunities in endovascular surgery. The unit is recognised site for Vascular Society-Cook endovascular fellowship.
