LOCUM CONSULTANT IN RENAL MEDICINE

Start Date - 2 January 2019 for 1 Year

Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals is the regional teaching hospital, providing general acute services to Brighton, Hove and Mid Sussex. They also provide tertiary services for patients across Sussex and the south east of England. Working as one hospital across two sites at the Royal Sussex County Hospital (RSCH) in Brighton and Princess Royal Hospital in Haywards Heath, we treat over half a million patients a year.

Applications are sought to fill a locum new renal consultant post; this post has been generated by other consultants in the department taking up permanent additional roles external to the renal department.  The job is a 10 PA post with a 8.5 DCC : 1.5 SPA split.

The successful applicant will be based at the Sussex Kidney Unit in the RSCH in Brighton and will undertake roles in Brighton including a clinic and a tunnelled line list. The post will also involve an out-patient outreach nephrology clinic based at Worthing Hospital and provide consults on renal in-patients there. The post holder will also be responsible for the Satellite haemodialysis cohort in Worthing.

The post holder will be involved in the renal consultant on-call rota at the RSCH in Brighton managing renal inpatients on the ward, outliers within the hospital and referrals from elsewhere on a 1:8.5 – 1:9.5 basis.

There is no general medical component to the job. The position ideally would start 2 January 2019 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The successful applicant will join a team of ten full time consultant nephrologists. Sussex Kidney Unit (SKU) is the tertiary centre for a catchment population of 1.2M. There are 26 inpatient beds, 500 haemodialysis patients (including a well established home haemodialysis programme and 4 satellite units), 60 patients on peritoneal dialysis and 500 renal transplant follow up patients. The SKU treats approximately 150 acute kidney injury patients per year requiring acute dialysis and provides plasma exchange. There are approximately 170 incident renal replacement therapy patients each year.
